K2 Enrichment Program
Engineering and Science for Young Children

Educational Goals

As expected, your child will learn a range of STEM concepts and develop inquiry and design skills. Moreover, one of the strong points of pride at K2E is the focus on having children learn how to
  • work with other children,
  • develop responsibility,
  • take initiative, and
  • communicate their work.

K2E Approach

We have developed the K2E approach over several years. Some of the essential components are (1) relating science and engineering with everyday objects, (2) using exciting situations to grab the children's interest, (3) applying different approaches to match children's learning styles, (4) promoting persistence on tough problems, and (5) encouraging all the children to help each other. We wrap all these components in a "Design Challenge" for each session.

Design Challenges:

Each session has a different "Design  Challenge" that the children work on over a 7 week period. The design challenge may be related to a Future Community, an Engineering Design, or a Technology investigation.

Some sample Future Communities are:
  • Atlantis- developing security, transportation and shelter for underwater.
  • Mission to the Arctic- building vehicles and housing.
  • Underground City- creating a network of tunnels and transportation technologies.
  • Lego cities - designing and building cities virtually and physically.

Some sample Engineering Design and Technology Investigations are:
  • Wind Power- how to build a better blade for a windmill.
  • Environmental Engineering- how to filter water and grow plants.
  • Bridges- how to make different bridge designs.
  • Electrical Engineering- take apart and customize remote controlled cars.
  • Mechanics - build a Rube Goldberg Machine.
  • Simple Machines - Explore and understanding Simple Machine.
  • Computer Aided Design - Design with Google Sketch-up.
  • Coding - Learn basic programming on Scratch and Alice.
  • Robotics - Learn to program the Edison robot
